Victor’s Salute
Italy—General Bernard L. Montgomery, chief of the British 8th Army, salutes his fighting men as they pass through a street in Reggio Calabria. This is the first photo of the Allied foothold on the continent of Europe and since it was taken the 8th Army has driven steadily ahead on the Calabrian coastal road extending the invasion around Italy’s southernmost tip to about 60 miles.
