DOWN AS THEY BATTLED GERMAN ATTACK
CHAUMONT, BELGIUM—Killed as they tried to ward off the German counter-offensive launched at Chaumont, five miles south of Bastogne, these American soldiers lie where they fell in the snow. On the right, three Yanks in a jeep keep on the alert for other enemy attacks. Gen. Patton’s army, which relieved besieged Bastogne, has succeeded in narrowing the neck of the German bulge to less than 10 miles.
